This article is the first in a series intended to develop our professional language — our terminology. This effort is part of the work required to develop a taxonomy of types of information, and in time will form part of the IAIDQ Body of Knowledge. While that project evolves, we will use this forum to progress the work. The author welcomes comments through the email address provided at the end of the article.
For the moment we will ignore the big and vexed question of the difference, if any, between data and information. Informally, we will use data to refer to a collection of simple facts about something.
